A man is charged with murder after allegedly killing another man near Las Vegas Academy Thursday morning, creating a chaotic scene for high school students arriving as gunfire erupted. Major Sanford, 44, apprehended near the incident site, is set to appear in court Friday afternoon. He faces multiple charges, including open murder with a deadly weapon, discharging a gun into an occupied structure (four charges), possession of a gun by a prohibited person (two charges), and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.
According to Clark County Detention Center records, Sanford was observed shooting into the victim’s apartment before leaving the scene, leading to his subsequent arrest. Police responded to reports of gunfire in the school vicinity just before classes commenced, detaining Sanford based on witness descriptions. A deceased man with a gunshot wound to the head was discovered at a nearby apartment complex.
Sanford's criminal history, outlined in court records dating back to 2003, includes arrests for theft, burglary, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and being an ex-felon with a deadly weapon, resulting in previous incarceration in the Nevada prison system.
