Officials from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation are looking into the demise of an inmate at Kern Valley State Prison as a homicide, the department declared on Saturday.
As per a CDCR statement, two inmates reportedly assaulted another prisoner, identified as 41-year-old Isaac Duran, with a makeshift weapon created by inmates at 2:55 p.m. on Oct. 14. Duran suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to an external medical facility for advanced care. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on Nov. 9 while receiving treatment at Kern Medical Center.
Duran, admitted from Tulare County on April 17, 2003, was serving a life sentence with the chance of parole for two counts of first-degree attempted murder with firearm-related enhancements, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and involvement in street gang activity.
During his incarceration, Duran was sentenced in Kings County to serve 12 years and four months for offenses including assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon, possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, and battery on a non-prisoner.
The two assailants were identified as Roland C. Corona, 57, and Luis Alvidrez, 33. Corona, received from Fresno County on June 4, 2003, is serving a life sentence with the possibility of parole for armed robbery, burglary with firearm use, false imprisonment with firearm use, vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, and criminal threat.
He also received an additional 12-year sentence for possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner. Alvidrez, admitted from San Diego County on June 1, 2017, is serving an 18-year, four-month sentence for second-degree armed robbery with personal use of a dangerous weapon, and second-degree robbery as a second striker.
He also received additional time for offenses including possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner and assault with a deadly weapon as a second striker.
Both suspects have been placed in restricted housing pending investigation. The case is under scrutiny by KVSP’s Investigative Services Unit, the Kern County District Attorney’s Office, and the Kern County Coroner.
The Office of the Inspector General has been informed, and the official cause of Duran’s death will be determined by the Kern County Coroner, according to CDCR. No other inmates or prison staff suffered injuries.
