Life Sentence for Texas Man, Edward Murray Who Fatally Shot Neighbor in Hate Crime Case

A man from Texas received a life sentence on November 1 for fatally shooting his neighbor in front of his apartment, along with a $10,000 fine as ordered by a jury in connection with the death.

During the court proceedings, Edward Murray, 57, expressed remorse for the family and children of the victim, Antonio Robinson, admitting to having consumed vodka before the encounter. "I'm sorry that I let this happen. It's not about me. It's about everybody else that I hurt," Murray stated, as reported by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The sentencing follows an incident three years ago when Murray used a hammerless revolver to open fire on Robinson, a Black man, resulting in his death. Robinson resided in the apartment across from Murray with his girlfriend and three children.

The children, aged two, three, and nine, frequently played with their toys on the concrete sidewalk outside both units, a factor that reportedly agitated Murray, according to the Star-Telegram. The sidewalk linked the entrances of the apartments, which were about 10 feet apart.

On the day of the shooting, Murray kicked a ball belonging to the children, leading him to retrieve his firearm from inside his residence. Without provocation, Murray fired three shots at Robinson. As court records and the outlet highlighted, the victim's family attempted to halt the bleeding, with Murray pointing his gun at the victim's girlfriend before leaving the scene.

Robinson was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Murray was apprehended by authorities several hours later and subsequently charged with murder. He was found guilty the following day.

According to KXAS-TV, Robinson's girlfriend, Ashley Lacy, suggested that Murray, who is white, had a history of using racial slurs against their family. Lacy believed the shooting to be a hate crime, expressing concern for the trauma their children would endure. "My children are going to be so traumatized because they went to sleep and took a nap, and they woke up to no daddy," she stated in 2020.
