Man Held Hostage Rescued, Suspect Arrested After Standoff

A New York man was arrested after an hours-long standoff inside a home in Long Island. The standoff ended after police were able to communicate with a woman who was being held hostage and help her escape.

The suspect, identified as John Howell, was found hiding in the attic of the home and was arrested by Nassau County police.

Howell is accused of assaulting and threatening two people inside the home on Saturday. He is also accused of barricading himself inside the home and refusing to let police officers in.
The male victim, who was able to escape from the home, initially notified police about the situation. The Nassau County Police Hostage Negotiation Team was able to communicate with the female victim over the phone and help her escape.
After the female victim escaped, police breached the home and arrested Howell. He is facing charges of assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, and unlawful imprisonment.

Howell has an extensive criminal history, including a six-year prison sentence for assault and drug convictions. He was most recently released from prison in 2021.
It is not yet clear how Howell got into the home or whether he knew the victims.
