In Miami, a police officer found himself on the wrong side of the law as he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. He was discovered passed out in a car with a firearm. The incident occurred on a Tuesday evening, just before 7 p.m., when Miami police received a call about a suspicious situation involving a man named Joevanih Sauvagere, who was detained in the back of a police vehicle.
When the responding officer approached Sauvagere, they immediately noticed a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. Sauvagere's eyes appeared bloodshot and watery, and his eyelids were drooping. The officer requested Sauvagere to perform field sobriety tests, but he refused. Concerned about his well-being, fire and rescue personnel were called to the scene.
The initial report that led to the discovery of Sauvagere was made by a school district officer, who was alerted to a silver vehicle with a driver passed out behind the wheel. The school district officer tried to get Sauvagere's attention by knocking on the car window, as loud music was blaring inside. Sauvagere eventually lowered the window, turned down the music, and was instructed to put the car in park. However, instead of following the command, he shifted the vehicle into reverse, rolled back a few feet, stopped, and then finally put the car in park.
Around the same time, a Miami police lieutenant passing by noticed the commotion and stopped to assist. The school district officer observed a firearm on Sauvagere's lap and held him at gunpoint. The Miami police lieutenant promptly removed the weapon from the vehicle, as Sauvagere appeared to be in a state of drowsiness.
Additional police units arrived, and Sauvagere was removed from his vehicle and taken into custody. Subsequently, Sauvagere was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital due to reported stomach pain. However, he declined to provide a blood sample.
Reports indicate that Sauvagere has been released from custody, but the Miami Police Department has not made any statements regarding the status of his job in light of the DUI charge.
