A beloved artist from Louisiana, Annie Weinstein Richardson, tragically lost her life following a harrowing stabbing incident at Louisiana Tech University.
The attack, occurring on Monday morning, involved four individuals, including Richardson, who fell victim to an alleged stabbing spree carried out by Jacoby Johnson, a senior student at the university. Initially faced with four counts of attempted murder, Johnson now faces charges of second-degree murder.
Reports indicate that Johnson used a folding knife with a blade roughly four inches long during the violent episode, as per Ruston Police Chief Steve Rogers. The university stated that this act appeared to be a random act of violence, with the victims comprising a graduate student and individuals not associated with the university.
The victims were identified as Judge Cynthia Woodard, retired teacher Debby Hollimon, and graduate student Dominique McKane, aside from Richardson. Accounts from witnesses revealed that Richardson and Woodard were attacked while leaving a senior exercise class, seemingly ambushed from behind by Johnson.
McKane was assaulted in a parking lot, while Hollimon bravely attempted to intervene, sustaining a facial injury during the altercation.
According to Louisiana Tech Police Chief Randal Hermes, Johnson appears to have struggled with mental health issues. Rogers mentioned a brief interaction with Johnson a week earlier, unrelated to any criminal activity, as reported by the Ruston Daily Leader.
University President Les Guice conveyed the deep sense of loss felt within the Tech community and acknowledged the community's support during this grieving period.
