In a shocking turn of events, six inmates at the El Paso County Jail Annex allegedly murdered their fellow prisoner, Jesus Torres, on Monday. The incident has sent shockwaves through the facility, prompting officials to take immediate action to prevent potential retaliation and maintain order.
Officers discovered Torres unresponsive in his cell and rushed him to medical personnel, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A subsequent investigation revealed that Torres had been assaulted, and his death was ruled a homicide.
In anticipation of possible retaliation, jail administrators swiftly separated inmates, placing certain individuals in solitary confinement.
Detectives have also identified six inmates from the same cell block as Torres' suspected killers.
The six suspects, Manuel Alejandro Vargas (31), Juan Alberto Ortiz (18), George Lopez (23), Jesus Adrian Rocha (38), Jovani Dionicio Ramos (29), and Christian Carillo (25), were charged accordingly. Ortiz, who was already awaiting trial for the alleged murder of his mother last year, faces capital murder charges, while the others are charged with murder.
A motive for the deadly assault remains unclear.
Torres had been incarcerated since early June on charges of drug possession and a probation violation stemming from a human smuggling case.
