A convicted rapist and murderer passed away in a Michigan state prison recently due to natural causes, as confirmed by the state’s department of corrections. He was serving a life sentence for the brutal 1996 rape and murder of a mother of two.
Additionally, last year, he faced accusations of another woman's murder in Maryland, although he hadn't been tried for that case yet.
In September, Gary Dean Artman, 66, was found guilty for the cold case of 29-year-old Sharron Hammack, convicted on charges of open murder, felony murder, and criminal sexual conduct in the first degree.
Artman's own disturbing writings about jealousy, frustration, and violent acts were used as evidence in securing his convictions. His journals revealed callous thoughts about his crimes and a lack of remorse for his actions.
The murderer was arrested in August 2022, almost 26 years after the tragic incident near Caledonia, Michigan, where the victim was raped, stabbed, hogtied, and left in a field to die.
DNA evidence and other clues at the crime scene eventually led to Artman's arrest in Mississippi, despite him residing in Florida at the time.
Following his arrest, it was revealed that he was also linked to a case in Maryland and was subsequently charged with the 2006 murder of Dusty Myriah Shuck, 24.
Prosecutors had previously disclosed Artman's terminal cancer, which is assumed to be the cause of his demise.
