In Tennessee, a 43-year-old former police officer, Lawrence Goodine, faces charges of murder, kidnapping, and evidence tampering following the reported strangulation death of 48-year-old Kara Akins.
Aksin's demise, initially discovered on November 29 in a Chattanooga residence, was later deemed a homicide on December 15, with authorities noting signs of manual strangulation and head trauma.
According to reports from various outlets, including the Chattanooga Times Free Press, News Channel 9, and Local 3 News, Goodine allegedly informed authorities that he discovered Akins deceased at 3 a.m., suspecting an overdose.
A prior domestic incident occurred on October 3, where Goodine referred to Akins as his girlfriend, as per an affidavit from the Chattanooga Times Free Press. However, the nature of their relationship during Akins' passing remains unclear.
Goodine, formerly associated with the Chattanooga police force until his dismissal in 2007, is presently detained without bond at the Hamilton County jail, scheduled for a court appearance on Friday. At this juncture, any legal representation or plea entered by Goodine regarding the charges remains undisclosed.
