Monique Olivier, the widow of notorious French serial killer Michel Fourniret, admitted to her involvement in three murders spanning decades during her ongoing trial.
vhFourniret, nicknamed the "Ogre of the Ardennes," was accused of abducting, raping, and murdering young women, mainly virgins, over a 20-year period. He died in 2021 before facing trial.
Olivier's trial began on Tuesday in Nanterre, west of Paris. On the second day, she confirmed her participation in the crimes, stating, "I acknowledge all the facts."
The charges against Olivier include aiding and abetting the kidnapping and murder of Marie-Angele Domece (18) in 1988, Joanna Parrish (20) in 1990, and Estelle Mouzin (9) in 2003. Mouzin's body remains missing.
Olivier displayed little emotion as she listened to witnesses, including Francis Nachbar, the prosecutor from the couple's first trial in 2008. He described Olivier's duplicity as "beyond comprehension."
Olivier previously claimed that Fourniret had "used" her and denied any intentional involvement. She expressed regret for the events, stating, "I regret everything that happened."
Having already received a life sentence in 2008 for aiding Fourniret's crimes, Olivier faces a potential second life sentence in this trial. She was also given a 20-year sentence in 2018 for participating in the murder of Farida Hammiche.
Olivier's involvement began in the early 1980s after fleeing from her abusive first husband. She became pen pals with Fourniret while he was imprisoned for rape. They allegedly agreed that she would find him virgins to rape in exchange for killing her first husband, a promise he never fulfilled.
According to the BBC, the couple's first known victim was 17-year-old Isabelle Laville in 1987. Olivier lured Laville into their van and later picked up Fourniret, who proceeded to rape and murder the teenager.
Their reign of terror continued for 16 years, claiming the lives of at least eight girls and young women, until their arrest in 2003. A 13-year-old girl managed to escape Fourniret's attempted abduction, leading to their downfall.
Besides the confirmed victims, Olivier and Fourniret are suspected to be involved in additional murders. The trial continues to seek justice for the victims and uncover the full extent of their crimes.
