A five-year-long wait for justice ended this week when two individuals were sentenced for the brutal murder of Telma Boinville, a cleaner tragically killed while working at a Hawaiian vacation rental.
Stephen Brown received life imprisonment with the possibility of parole for murder and 20 years for unrelated charges. His girlfriend at the time, Hailey Dandurand, received a similar sentence for murder and kidnapping, along with additional terms for burglary and unauthorized possession of confidential information.
Judge Rowena Somerville described the murder as "one of the most heinous cases to occur in Hawaii," highlighting the senseless attack that unfolded as Boinville stumbled upon Brown and Dandurand during a burglary.
Both defendants remained silent during sentencing, having already been convicted of second-degree murder, burglary, and kidnapping.
The crime deeply impacted the community of Pupukea, where Boinville, a beloved teacher and mother, was working extra jobs to support her family. Her young daughter, Makana, witnessed the horrific event and was subsequently kidnapped and traumatized.
Prosecutors revealed that Brown tied Boinville up before she was killed with a machete and other weapons, allegedly in the presence of Dandurand.
Makana's father, Kevin Emery, described the lasting impact on his daughter, stating she now sleeps in his bed and remains fearful of entering homes. He emphasized the need for justice, driving Makana to and from school for years due to the trauma inflicted by the defendants.
The sentencing marked a significant step towards closure for the Boinville family and the community, ensuring those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
