Paula Abdul has filed a lawsuit against Nigel Lythgoe, accusing him of multiple counts of sexual assault. Abdul, known for her roles on shows like "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance," claims that Lythgoe, an executive producer on these shows, sexually assaulted her twice.
These incidents allegedly occurred during the early seasons of "American Idol" and during Abdul's time on "So You Think You Can Dance." Additionally, Abdul accuses Lythgoe of sexually assaulting her assistant.
The lawsuit includes allegations of sexual assault/battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, and negligence. Abdul is using the Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act to file these claims, which allows such suits even if the statute of limitations has expired.
The lawsuit lists Lythgoe, along with several production companies associated with the shows, as defendants. There hasn’t been an immediate response from the representatives of the involved parties.
According to the documents, the first incident allegedly occurred in the early 2000s during a regional audition for "American Idol." Abdul claims Lythgoe assaulted her in an elevator by groping her and making unwelcome advances.
Abdul reportedly chose not to take action after the first incident due to fear of reprisal that could have jeopardized her position on "American Idol."
The second alleged assault occurred in 2015 during a dinner at Lythgoe’s home. Abdul states Lythgoe made unwanted advances, which she rejected.
Abdul also claims witnessing an alleged assault by Lythgoe against her assistant in 2015.
Earlier this year, Abdul, speaking exclusively to PEOPLE, discussed her perspective on turning 60, emphasizing the importance of kindness, support, and combating bullies.
