Scranton, Pennsylvania - A man in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is facing charges of murder and risking a catastrophe after allegedly killing his girlfriend and attempting to take his own life in a series of disturbing events.
Donnell Brunson, 55, stands accused of brutally attacking and killing his girlfriend, Danielle Barbuti, 49, in their apartment. Brunson allegedly told detectives that he suspected Barbuti of cheating on him, which led him to attack her in a fit of rage.
The details of the attack are horrific. Brunson allegedly punched Barbuti repeatedly in the head and face, then hit her with a ceramic ashtray and covered her mouth with his hands. Finally, he used a pillow to smother her screams.
Following the murder, Brunson allegedly attempted to take his own life. He swallowed sleeping pills, slashed his wrist, and turned on the gas stove in an attempt to cause an explosion. However, he woke up several hours later, surprised to be alive.
Brunson then fled the scene and attempted to take his life again by overdosing on pills. He was eventually tracked down by police and arrested.
The investigation revealed a gruesome scene at the apartment. Blood was found on walls, furniture, and utensils. Additionally, police found weapons, pill bottles, and other evidence linking Brunson to the crime.
The autopsy confirmed that Barbuti died from asphyxiation.
Despite his actions, Brunson expressed remorse in a text message to Barbuti the night before the murder. He wrote, "Thank you for your trust. It's nice to know that you see I'm in love with you so much that I would never do anything to hurt you."
Brunson remains in custody without bail and is due to appear in court on December 27th.
This tragedy serves as a reminder of the devastating effects of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help if you are in an abusive relationship.
