A young girl's murderer continues to play games with investigators as they search for Sara Anne Wood's body, possibly buried alongside other victims, according to a prosecutor speaking to Fox News Digital.
Sara Anne Wood, just 12 years old when she disappeared during a bike ride from her church to her home in upstate New York on August 18, 1993. Lewis Lent Jr. confessed to abducting and killing her in 1996 but has concealed the location of her grave for decades.
Herkimer County District Attorney Jeffrey Carpenter, emphasizing Lent's psychopathic nature, revealed continuous efforts over 30 years to extract information from Lent. Despite a potential lead in mid-November pointing to Vermont's Dome Hiking Trail, the search yielded no results, frustrating investigators.
Carpenter shared a couple of theories about why Lent Jr. refuses to disclose Wood's grave site. He suggested Lent might be toying with investigators, citing a 2013 attempt to reveal the location, which Lent again kept to himself. Carpenter believes Lent wants to retain control and fears prosecution for potential crimes involving other buried children.
Lent Jr., now in his 70s, first came to law enforcement's attention in 1994 with an attempted gunpoint abduction in Massachusetts. He later admitted to multiple abductions and murders, including that of Sara Anne Wood. Despite a life sentence for one murder and 25 years to life for Wood's murder, Lent has not served time in New York for the latter.
Carpenter expressed a commitment to bringing Lent back to New York for Sara's murder sentence, emphasizing the personal nature of the case for investigators and law enforcement in Herkimer County. He described the impact of Sara's abduction on the community, transforming the lives of its residents.
The prosecutor stressed the ongoing fight for justice, closure for Sara's family, and the restoration of a sense of normalcy in the community that has been forever changed by the tragic events surrounding Sara Anne Wood.
