Tragedy in Lancaster: Mother of Two Shot After 911 Call, Family Files $30 Million Claim Against Sheriff's Department

A young mother, Niani Finlayson (27), was tragically shot and killed in her own home after calling 911 for help during a domestic disturbance. Her family has filed a $30 million claim against Los Angeles County and the Sheriff's Department, alleging wrongful death and civil rights violations.

On December 4th, deputies responded to a 6 pm emergency call at Finlayson's apartment. She reportedly sought help due to a man refusing to leave and potentially harming her and her 9-year-old daughter (details of charges against the man are unclear).

According to the Sheriff's Department, a confrontation unfolded upon arrival, involving a knife wielded by Finlayson and verbal threats towards the other individual. A single deputy fired their weapon, resulting in Finlayson's death.

Her family's lawyer, Brad Gage, paints a different picture. He claims Finlayson was given the knife for self-defense and was sitting peacefully when shot from behind a glass door, four times in the back.

He further alleges the 911 call involved reports of strangulation and child endangerment, and questions the deputy's actions after the shooting, citing alleged excessive force used against the other individual.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department insists on transparency, promising to release body camera footage of the incident next week, ahead of the required timeframe. They emphasize their commitment to a thorough review process, including investigations by the Office of Inspector General and the District Attorney's Office.

This tragic event has sparked outrage and calls for justice. In the meantime, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support Finlayson's children.
