A shocking incident has rocked the community of Liberty Township, Ohio, as a 6-month-old baby girl was critically injured after being shot in the face by her own grandmother. 43-year-old Mia Desiree Harris has been arrested and charged with three counts of felonious assault, with potential for further charges as the investigation unfolds.
On Saturday morning, around 1:50 AM, deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a home in Liberty Township. Upon arrival, they discovered a distressing scene - a young infant suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
"It was intentional, not an accident," stated Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones, expressing his disgust at the unspeakable act. "This is one of the most heinous crimes I've ever witnessed, and it's even worse knowing the perpetrator was the baby's own grandmother."
The child, currently in critical condition, underwent two surgeries but remains under medical care. Thankfully, she is receiving the best possible medical attention and support.
Following the incident, Harris fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after by authorities on northbound Interstate 75. Witnesses confirmed her identity as the shooter, detailing a disturbing sequence of events where Harris first fired at family members before targeting the innocent infant.
"She shot the baby with no apparent remorse," lamented Sheriff Jones, expressing his sympathy for the child, family, and everyone impacted by this tragedy. "This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved, including medical personnel, first responders, and the entire community."
Harris is currently being held without bond at the Butler County Jail as the investigation continues. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences gun violence can have, especially when directed towards the most vulnerable members of our society. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured child and her family during this difficult time.
