Convicted Killer, Jason Budrow, Accused of Attacking Kristin Smart's Murderer in Prison, Pleads Not Guilty to New Charges
In a disturbing series of events, Jason Budrow, 43, previously convicted of murdering his girlfriend, has faced new accusations within a California prison, allegedly attempting to harm Paul Flores, convicted for Kristin Smart's murder. Budrow, a prisoner at Pleasant Valley State Prison, reportedly slashed Flores in the neck during a prison yard incident.
Charged with four new felonies including attempted murder and possessing a weapon, Budrow pleaded not guilty in a recent court appearance. Both Budrow and Flores were inmates at the same prison, with Flores serving a sentence for Smart's 1996 disappearance and presumed murder from the university campus.
Smart, a first-year college student, vanished after attending an off-campus party, allegedly killed by Flores during a rape attempt in his dorm room, prosecutors claim.
Budrow, sporting a distinctive "666" tattoo, allegedly attacked Flores over the summer, resulting in Flores' hospitalization and subsequent return to prison. The motive behind the attack remains undisclosed.
Notably, Budrow had previously been at Mule Creek State Prison before his transfer to Pleasant Valley, where he strangled his cellmate, Robert Kibbe, a notorious serial killer from the 1970s and 1980s. Kibbe's infamous methods included distinctive patterns cut into his victims' clothing.
Already serving two life sentences, Budrow faces an additional 27 years if found guilty of these new charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 11 in Fresno County Superior Court.
