Father, Arkete Davis, and 10-Year-Old Son Arrested in California After Fatal Shooting of Another Child by the Son

A man and his 10-year-old son were arrested in Sacramento after the son accidentally shot and killed another 10-year-old boy with his father's gun. Arkete Davis, 53, and his son were apprehended after the child found the gun in their vehicle and used it, leading to the tragic incident, reported by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The young boy faces murder charges, while Davis confronts multiple firearm-related felonies, child endangerment, and an accessory charge. Davis is presently held on $500,000 bail.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting on Greenholme Drive around 4:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they found an injured juvenile who later succumbed to the injuries. Witnesses indicated the involved individuals fled to a nearby apartment, resulting in the detention of an adult and two juveniles.

Investigation revealed that the 10-year-old retrieved the gun from the vehicle to get cigarettes for his father and, boasting about it, fired a single shot at the victim before seeking refuge in the apartment.

Despite being legally prohibited from owning a firearm, Davis allegedly tried to discard the weapon in a nearby trashcan. The gun was reportedly stolen in 2017.

Davis' son was taken to Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility, while Davis awaits court on Jan. 3 at Sacramento County Main Jail.

According to NBC affiliate KCRA, the victim's aunt described him as a bright, respectful boy who had just gone outside for a short bike ride before the tragic incident.

Sheriff Jim Cooper emphasized the avoidable nature of the tragedy and highlighted the illegal possession of firearms, pledging to address this concern in 2024.
