South African Man Sentenced to Life for Assaulting and Raping a 90-Year-Old Woman

In a significant ruling, the Groblersdal Regional Court in Limpopo, South Africa, has sentenced a 35-year-old man to spend the rest of his life behind bars, for raping and assaulting a 90-year-old woman.

The court learned that on July 31, 2022, Ephraim Matshela Madiba forcefully entered the woman's home in Elandskraal, where he discovered a machete. Without hesitation, he used the weapon to attack the elderly victim before committing the vile act of rape.

Following the brutal assault, Madiba fled the scene, taking the machete with him. Thankfully, authorities swiftly responded to the incident, opening cases of rape and assault with serious bodily harm.

The victim, a nonagenarian, received urgent medical attention at a local hospital, while Sergeant Lesetja Langa of the Mokopane family violence, child protection, and sexual offences unit took charge of the investigation.

The Groblersdal Regional Court delivered justice by sentencing Madiba to life imprisonment for the despicable act of rape, with an additional 24 months for the assault.

These sentences will run concurrently.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the investigating officer and his team for their dedication, expressing satisfaction with the lengthy sentence imposed on Madiba. Justice, she affirmed, has been served.
