Alabama Political Staffer Arrested in Connection with Local Man's Death

Kyle Hayden Lewter (36), a former political staffer in Madison County, Alabama, is currently in custody facing charges of murder and sexual abuse with an object.

Authorities responded to a call on Thursday regarding a deceased individual at a residence on Capshaw Road in Harvest.

The victim, identified as Derek Franklin Walls (54), was found dead inside the home.

According to a statement released by the Madison County Sheriff's Office, a physical altercation allegedly occurred between Lewter and Walls, resulting in Walls' death. The cause of death remains undetermined, pending an autopsy.

Authorities have confirmed it was not a gunshot wound.

A GoFundMe campaign established by Walls' daughter, Shelby Thorson, has successfully reached its goal to cover funeral expenses.

Thorson expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community.

Lewter reportedly held previous positions with the campaign office of State Senator Tom Butler and served as Vice Chairman of the Madison County Young Republicans.

Both Senator Butler and Madison County Commission Chairman Mac McCutcheon have expressed shock and sadness in response to the allegations.

However, they declined to comment further due to the ongoing investigation.

It's important to note that these are just the initial charges. Lewter is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
