Man Convicted of Killing and Dismembering Trafficked Woman, Watched Crime Shows for Cover-Up Tips

A man from New York City named Cory Martin was found guilty of killing and cutting up Brandy Odom in 2018. Authorities say he trafficked her for sex and even watched crime shows to learn how to hide the murder.

Martin, now 36, strangled 26-year-old Odom in April 2018. He and another person who lived with them planned to get money from life insurance policies they took out in Odom's name by faking her death.

His co-conspirator, Adelle Anderson, testified against him. She said Martin watched crime shows like "The First 48" and "Dexter" to figure out how to do the crime and avoid getting caught.

Anderson told authorities that after Martin killed Odom, they bought cleaning supplies and a vacuum to clean up. Martin used black garbage bags to cover the bathtub and cut up Odom's body, then they spread her parts across a park in Brooklyn.

Breon Peace, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said Martin viewed Odom as his "money maker" and killed her to make money from her death.

Anderson tried to get the insurance money, following Martin's orders, but didn't succeed. She pleaded guilty to charges related to the murder and insurance scam, but it's not clear if she's been sentenced yet.

Attorney Peace criticized Martin for his greedy and cruel crime, saying Brandy Odom's life mattered, and he hopes the verdict would bring some peace to her family.
