GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office has announced a significant breakthrough in a cold case that has puzzled investigators for decades.
During a press conference on Monday, Sheriff Hobart Lewis revealed that deputies discovered a potter’s grave in northern Greenville County, marked with a sign reading “Mr. X.”
Mr. X was the subject of a death investigation that began on January 4, 1975.
His body was found by a hunter on a property along Highway 20 near Blakely Road.
The victim was wrapped in a sheet and smoldering, indicating he had been set on fire.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office determined that Mr. X was murdered, citing blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation as the causes of death.
For years, despite numerous efforts, the identity of Mr. X remained a mystery.
When Sheriff Lewis took office in 2020, he revitalized the cold case unit to re-examine unresolved cases using modern technology.
This unit has since solved 11 cases.
The breakthrough came on June 10, 2024, when Sheriff Lewis announced that Mr. X had been identified as Oscar James Nedd from White Plains, New York.
In February 2024, the White Plains Police Department contacted the sheriff's office regarding a potential match with a missing person case.
That individual was Nedd.
In 1976, Jackie Anderson was arrested and charged with Nedd’s murder, but the case was dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Investigators now believe that Nedd was killed in New York and his body transported to South Carolina.
Sheriff Lewis emphasized that the homicide investigation remains active. “The tireless work and innovative approaches employed by our investigators have brought closure to a case that has remained a mystery for nearly five decades,” he said.
“Their determination to seek justice for victims and their families is truly commendable. I want to thank each member of our cold case unit for their hard work and commitment.”
Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office or Crime Stoppers of Greenville at 23-CRIME.
