Skeletal Remains found in Tennessee Identified as Missing 20-Year-Old Georgia Woman

Authorities have officially confirmed the identity of a young woman from Georgia who had been missing for months.

Her skeletal remains were discovered earlier this year in Tennessee.

The discovery was made on January 5th in a rural area near Chatanooga, Tenn., as detailed in a press release from Georgia’s Cobb County Police Department dated May 31st.

The Hamilton County Medical Examiner's Office subsequently identified the remains as those of Maury-Ange Faith Martinez from Alpharetta, Ga.

Martinez was first reported missing in Gwinnett County on August 28, 2023.

Reports from ABC affiliate WSB and NBC affiliate WXIA suggest that she was last seen leaving the Gwinnett County Jail.

However, further investigation revealed that her last known location was in Cobb County.

The Cobb County Police Department has appealed to the public for any information regarding Martinez's whereabouts around the time of her disappearance.

The investigation into her case remains ongoing.

Anita Darling, Martinez’s mother, spoke to WXIA about the devastating impact of her daughter’s death.

"You are totally torn apart. Then, there is the heartbreak of realizing you lost your child. My kids are like my everything. It was horrible. It was huge," she expressed.

Darling recounted the last time she spent with Martinez, which was on August 17, 2023, for a meal and a movie.

She revealed that she was prepared to pick up Martinez from a courthouse area in metro Atlanta when Martinez informed her that she had received a ride from someone else.

Unfortunately, Martinez did not respond to any further communication from her mother.

Reflecting on the circumstances, Darling recalled feeling uneasy about the situation.

"I thought that it was somebody who worked at the facility," she said regarding Martinez getting a ride. "So I thought, 'Oh, that seemed to make sense.' I had a conversation about it with her. It still seemed a little strange. I got off the phone with her and felt uneasy about it."

Martinez was involved in ROTC, and her family intends to donate her remains for medical research purposes.

The Cobb County police have encouraged anyone with information about the case to contact them at 770-499-3945.
