A mother has been found guilty and sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years for the tragic death of her 4-year-old son in 2023.
Malisha Sasfras, 26, faced multiple charges, including felony murder, first-degree cruelty to children, and aggravated battery.
Prosecutors detailed the events leading up to the boy's death.
On February 11, 2023, around 4:30 p.m., the child was discovered unresponsive at their apartment on Candler Road in DeKalb County.
He was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Sasfras told investigators that her son had complained of a headache that morning and went back to bed.
Later that afternoon, one of her other children found him cold to the touch.
In a desperate attempt to wake him, Sasfras tried to pour water into his mouth but failed.
She then called her son’s father, Javonte Harris, who urged her to contact 911.
The medical examination of the boy revealed some very concerning details.
The boy had extensive injuries, including numerous scars and bruises at different stages of healing.
Some injuries appeared to be inflicted by a belt or cord.
Additionally, a scar around his neck suggested possible strangulation and blisters on his wrists and hands indicated he might have been bound.
There was also a severe injury to his face.
The DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office concluded that the boy died from blunt force trauma to the head, which likely occurred six to eight hours before his death.
Sasfras was the only adult present at the time and claimed ignorance regarding the facial injury.
She admitted to occasionally "whooping" her children but offered no further explanation for the boy’s extensive injuries.
Further investigation uncovered disturbing social media exchanges between Sasfras and Harris.
They discussed punishing the child for frequent bedwetting and daytime accidents.
Based on this evidence, a grand jury indicted Harris in May on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree child cruelty.
His next court appearance has yet to be scheduled.
