Lakrisha Isaac, the mother of a 10-year-old Florida girl accused of fatally shooting their neighbor, wept as the victim’s family gave emotional statements.
Lakrisha Isaac, 33, was charged in connection with the tragic death of Lashaun Rodgers.
She sat crying at the defense table while Rodgers' mother and daughter shared their grief and pain during the sentencing hearing.
Laura Chambliss, Rodgers’ mother, expressed her profound loss and enduring sorrow, saying, "I love and miss her so much. God is the final judge."
She emphasized her capacity for forgiveness but affirmed she would never forget the tragic event.
The Fatal Shooting
Orlando Police Department officers found Rodgers with a gunshot wound to the head on the night of the incident.
Despite CPR efforts, Rodgers succumbed to her injuries shortly after being admitted to the hospital.
Her boyfriend recounted that they were cooking outside when Isaac approached Rodgers and initiated an argument over a previous dispute.
The argument escalated, becoming physical when Isaac allegedly punched Rodgers, who then retaliated.
Rodgers’ boyfriend tried to pull her away, but she attempted to reengage Isaac.
At this point, Isaac’s daughter, who had been standing behind her mother, allegedly shot Rodgers in the face.
"She shouldn't have hit my momma," the young girl reportedly shouted after firing the fatal shot.
Isaac then took the gun from her daughter and pointed it at Rodgers’ boyfriend before returning to their apartment.
Another eyewitness corroborated this account, observing the incident through a peephole and hearing the young girl say, "You f****g with my momma," before the gunshot.
At the police station, Isaac invoked her Miranda Rights, refusing to speak with officers.
However, her daughter provided a statement, describing her mother as "drunk" and wanting to confront Rodgers.
Despite being told to stay in the apartment, the daughter followed her mother, witnessing the altercation.
The daughter claimed she saw Rodgers strike Isaac with an object and heard threats directed at her family.
This allegedly prompted her to retrieve the firearm and shoot Rodgers.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
The 10-year-old has been held in a detention center for two years, with the current status of her case unknown.
Isaac, out on bond since October 2022, was scheduled for trial in August of the previous year but accepted a plea deal in May.
Her lawyer confirmed the plea deal, which led to a reduced sentence.
"This is one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career," commented State Attorney Monique Worrell.
"This shooting is an unimaginable tragedy that defies easy solutions."
Isaac’s decision to accept the plea deal came after a high-profile case in Michigan where the parents of a school shooter were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, highlighting the complex issues surrounding parental responsibility in tragic events.
