A 28-year-old man from Texas will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing a woman he was obsessed with.
He didn't just kill the woman; he also killed her roommate.
Last year, Rosendo Jesus Montoya fatally shot 33-year-old Mary Heinz and her 43-year-old roommate, Laura West.
On Monday, Atascosa County District Court Judge Russell H. Wilson sentenced Montoya to life without parole.
On June 29, 2023, around 5 a.m., deputies and firefighters responded to a fire at a home on Peach Street in Leming, Texas.
They found West, the homeowner, dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
Heinz, her roommate, was missing, sparking immediate concern.
Over the next week, investigators conducted interviews, gathered evidence, and reviewed surveillance footage.
They found out Montoya had worked with Heinz at McDonald's and had become obsessed with her.
Sheriff David Soward explained how Montoya was arrested.
Investigators watched him throw away two black bags with human body parts in them.
They arrested him immediately at this point.
Montoya then showed them where he had left Heinz's body in a very remote place after he shot her.
County District Attorney Audrey Louis revealed that Montoya may have briefly dated Heinz.
When she ended things, he became infatuated, stalked her, and waited in her home to kill her.
West's arrival during the attack led to her murder as well.
Montoya's admission of guilt saves the grieving families from the pain of a trial.
DA Louis emphasized that Montoya will no longer pose a threat to anyone outside prison, although it doesn’t undo the pain inflicted on the victims' families.
In court, Mary Heinz’s mother, Michelle Heinz, delivered a powerful statement to Montoya, calling him an "evil, little weasel" and expressing the anguish caused to both families.
Sheriff Soward described Montoya as a “serial killer in the making,” emphasizing the threat he posed to society.
