Lalita Kayi Kumar: American Woman Found Chained to Tree in Indian Forest After 40 Days Without Food

An American woman was recently found chained to a tree in a thick Indian forest.

She said her former husband had tied her there for 40 days without food and water.

Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, was found very weak and unable to talk by rescuers in Sindhudurg, which is about 290 miles south of Mumbai.

She wrote a note for the hospital staff saying, "My husband tied me to a tree in a forest and said I would die there."

She also mentioned that she would need intravenous feeding.

This was because she had been given an "injection for severe psychosis that caused her jaw to lock, making it impossible for her to drink water."

Severe psychosis is a serious mental health condition where a person loses touch with reality.

They might experience intense delusions (false beliefs), hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there), and disorganized thinking.

This can severely affect their behavior, emotions, and ability to function in daily life.

Photos shared by the rescuers and hospital staff showed the woman as extremely thin.

She was also covered in dirt in the pictures.

According to the Indian Express, Ms. Kumar was found after a shepherd heard her cries for help and notified the police.

Currently, an attempted murder case has been filed against her former husband, and investigators are currently looking for him.

Police said she identified her "former husband" as the culprit in a note found in her bag.

Police confirmed that the woman was born in the US but had been living in India for 10 years, and her visa had expired.

According to India TV News, Ms. Kumar has been moved to a hospital for advanced treatment.

The doctors observed that she appeared to be having psychiatric issues due to her prolonged stay in the forest.

"The woman is weak as she has not eaten anything for a couple of days and also as the area experienced heavy rains," said a police official.

"We don't know for how long she was tied to that tree. We believe her husband, who hails from Tamil Nadu, tied her there and fled."

The official also said that the police are working to locate her relatives in India as part of the investigation.
