Missed Red Flags: Body Cam Footage Reveals Interview of Colt Gray in 2023 after School Shooting Threat

Colt Gray, a 14-year-old student at Apalachee High School in Georgia, carried out a tragic mass shooting in September 2024.

He is currently facing charges as an adult for the shooting.

The incident claimed the lives of four individuals, including two students and two teachers 

Before the fatal incident, the police were already familiar with the suspect. 

A few months earlier, authorities had received complaints about him threatening a shooting spree. 

Officers responded to the call and interviewed  Colt Gray on the spot.

Here is a clip from that fateful police interaction where the officers failed to foresee what was coming next:

When the officers arrived at Colt Gray's home, they immediately noticed a defensive tone. 

He displayed a calm demeanor and claimed the whole situation was a misunderstanding. 

Colt Gray was clearly skilled at deflecting the questions, making the officers feel that he was not a threat.

He admitted to being involved in a verbal argument but repeatedly insisted that it was blown out of proportion. 

In the video, you can hear him say:

"I told them I'd never actually shoot anyone... it was just a bad day. Everyone overreacted."

The officers tried to de-escalate the situation and asked him if he owned any firearms.

Colt Gray said that he did have guns, but none were accessible at the time of the argument. 

After their conversation with Colt Gray, the police left the scene without filing charges. 

Despite his words, something about his body language suggested more was hidden beneath the surface

Unfortunately, just a few months later, Colt Gray committed the very act of violence he had previously assured authorities he would never carry out.

The bodycam video that was just released raises so many unsettling questions. 

1) Should the police have taken the threat more seriously? 

2) Could the violent incident that followed have been prevented if a different approach had been taken? 

On the day of the shooting, the school received a warning call.

However, confusion and miscommunication delayed a response. 

Colt Gray entered the school with an AR-style weapon and began shooting.

Thankfully, he was quickly subdued by a resource officer on-site

The Aftermath: Unraveling the Tragedy

After the incident, many in the community questioned the role of law enforcement.

They also questioned the effectiveness of the intervention of the police.

The suspect's actions in 2023 were a clear sign of trouble.

Sadly, it wasn’t until tragedy struck that the full scope of his mental state became apparent.

Since this tragedy, the department has reviewed its procedures for responding to threats, especially those involving individuals with access to firearms. 

While the police did their best under the circumstances, it's clear that more needs to be done to prevent future tragedies.
