February 7, 1999, remains a haunting date for the community of Kettering, Ohio.

It marks the day when nine-year-old Erica Baker disappeared.

Twenty-five years later, the Miami Valley community still holds onto the hope of finding answers.

Despite exhaustive investigations, countless searches, and a conviction, Erica's body has never been found.

This has left her family and investigators in an agonizing limbo.

A Tragic Day Unfolds

Erica Baker was described as a lively and friendly girl.

She was known for her smile and her habit of waving at everyone she passed.

On February, 7, 1999, Erica Baker set out for what seemed to be a routine walk near the Kettering Recreation Complex.

Despite her mother’s initial reluctance because of the rain, she took their dog, Jamie, for a walk.

That day, she wore her raincoat over a Winnie the Pooh sweater, a small but poignant detail that lingers in the memories of those who knew her.

Shortly after she left, Jamie, the family dog, was found wandering the streets alone, with its leash dragging on the ground.

Erica was nowhere to be found.

Authorities and Hundreds of volunteers combed the area, but no trace of the little girl was uncovered.

Erica Baker had mysteriously vanished without a trace.

Erica’s disappearance shook her hometown of Kettering to its core.

Neighbors, law enforcement, and strangers came together to search for the missing girl.

However, days turned into weeks, then months, with no answers.

Her father, Greg Baker, recalls how time seemed to stop on that fateful day.

"It's just that emptiness that has been there for 25 years of not actually knowing what happened," he reflected.

A Dark Confession: The Case Against Christian Gabriel

In July 1999, Christian Gabriel and his girlfriend at the time, Jan Franks, became prime suspects in Erica's disappearance.

It wasn't until 2004, however, that Gabriel confessed to hitting Erica with his van and burying her body.

According to Gabriel, he panicked because both he and Franks had criminal records.

So instead of calling for help, they hid the child's body.

Despite this confession, Gabriel's version of events was riddled with inconsistencies.

Over the years, he told three different stories to the police.

In each one, he changed key details, such as who was driving the van or where they had buried Erica.

His stories were never enough for prosecutors to charge him with homicide.

Instead, Gabriel was sentenced to six years in prison for gross abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.

Despite the fact that no body was found, he was still sentenced.

Gabriel's role in Erica's death, though riddled with contradictions, led to his conviction.

However, his unwillingness to reveal Erica's burial site has kept investigators and her family from finding closure.

After serving his sentence, Gabriel relocated to Florida, but the shadow of Erica Baker’s case continues to follow him.

Still Searching for Erica: Ongoing Investigations and New Hope

Erica’s case has never been closed.

Each new detective assigned to the case has faced the same grueling task; finding Erica's remains, inorder to give her family closure.

Over the years, police have partnered with organizations like Equusearch Midwest to lead new searches.

They used advanced tools and technology to excavate areas where they believed Erica may be buried.

One of the key locations that investigators have continually returned to is Huffman Dam.

Multiple searches have been conducted there, but none have yielded any results.

In January 2021, a team once again dug in the area.

The search was thorough, involving around 30 people and an excavator.

However, no remains were found.

Age progression picture for Erica Baker

For Erica's family, the pain of not knowing what happened to their daughter is a burden they have carried for more than two decades.

Greg Baker, in particular, remains hopeful that one day, a new date will be etched into his memory—the day they finally bring Erica home.

"We've been in this for 25 years," he said.

"But there have been other cases that have gone on a lot longer than hers, and they've been able to recover bodies. We always have that small sliver of chance of that happening," he added.

Despite the conviction of Christian Gabriel, Erica's family has never been able to lay her to rest.

The question that continues to torment them is the same one that has haunted the Kettering community for so long: Where is Erica Baker?

If anyone has any information about Erica's disappearance, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, they are urged to contact the Kettering Police Department at 937-296-2555.

As Greg Baker and the Kettering community continue their search for answers, they are united in their belief that one day, Erica Baker will be brought home.

In another unsolved mystery, two siblings went missing after they left for school with their mother.
