The Shocking Case of Raynaldo Ortiz: How a North Dallas Doctor Poisoned IV Bags to Get Back at Management

The story of Dr. Raynaldo Riviera Ortiz Jr., a former Dallas anesthesiologist, shocked the nation and beyond. 

In 2024, he was convicted of tampering with IV bags at a North Dallas surgical center.

His actions led to numerous cardiac emergencies and the tragic death of a fellow anesthesiologist, Dr. Melanie Kaspar. 

According to the Department of Justice, Ortiz turned routine medical procedures into life-threatening emergencies.

How Did Raynaldo Ortiz Poison IV Bags?

Between May and August 2022, Raynaldo Ortiz injected IV bags with a mixture of lethal drugs, at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare Center in North Dallas. 

The drugs included bupivacaine, epinephrine, and lidocaine—substances that could cause cardiac emergencies. 

Surveillance footage showed Ortiz tampering with IV bags at the North Texas Medical facility.

He would discreetly puncture the plastic wrap of the IV bags, inject the drugs, and place them back into a warming bin just outside the operating rooms.

He knew these bags would be used during surgeries, turning them into "medical time bombs."

As unsuspecting medical staff used the tampered bags during surgeries, patients experienced sudden and unexplained cardiac arrests.

Tragically, one of the tainted IV bags claimed the life of Dr. Kaspar, who unknowingly used it at home to rehydrate.

What Was Dr Raynaldo Ortiz’s Motive For Poisoning The IV Bags?

Raynold Ortiz’s actions were driven by personal vendettas and professional insecurity.

At the time of the poisonings, Ortiz was under investigation for a medical error in one of his surgeries. 

Facing potential disciplinary action and the suspension of his license, Ortiz reportedly felt his career and reputation were under attack. 

Ortiz hoped to create medical emergencies to distract attention from himself and shift the focus onto his colleagues. 

His twisted plan intended to make him appear less culpable to both his peers and the law.

How Was Raynaldo Ortiz Caught?

Raynaldo Ortiz’s downfall began when a young patient, 18-year-old Jack Adlerstein, suffered a near-fatal cardiac emergency during routine sinus surgery. 

The medical staff immediately suspected IV bag tampering after observing punctures in the bags.

As a result of this, they sent samples for laboratory analysis.

The results were deeply concerning leading to a criminal investigation into several other incidents involving cardiac emergencies. 

A thorough review of the surgical center’s surveillance footage sealed Ortiz's fate.

Ortiz was seen repeatedly putting IV bags into the warmer shortly before surgeries, after which patients experienced life-threatening complications. 

Additionally, his odd behavior—such as standing outside operating rooms and watching as victims were wheeled out in distress—raised suspicion among staff.

The final nail in Ortiz’s coffin was the death of Dr. Kaspar. 

Her sudden demise, tied directly to a poisoned IV bag she had taken home, brought national attention to the case. 

Ortiz was arrested in September 2022 following the conclusion of the federal criminal investigation into the case.

Raynaldo Ortiz’s Trial and Sentencing

Families of the victims worked with top criminal lawyers in Dallas, Texas to seek justice and prevent such tragedies in the future.

After an eight-day trial, Ortiz was found guilty on all 10 charges.

This included tampering with consumer products resulting in serious bodily injury and intentional adulteration of a drug. 

The trial revealed Ortiz’s calculated attempts to harm patients and colleagues.

Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Godbey sentenced Ortiz to the maximum penalty of 190 years in prison.

He emphasized the premeditated nature of the crimes saying, "he saw what happened and that he wasn’t suspected, and so he did it again and again and again." 

Ortiz, who waived his right to appear at the sentencing, showed no remorse, cementing his legacy as one of the most dangerous figures in modern medical history.
