In the realm of unsolved mysteries in Australia, the disappearance of Craig Leonard remains one case with several unanswered questions.

Craig Leonard, who was battling severe health issues, vanished from his home in  Salisbury East on January 10, 2010.

His story, one of the most puzzling cold cases in Australia, has left his family and investigators with so many questions for over a decade.

Was Craig the victim of foul play, or did other circumstances lead to his disappearance?

Could advancements in technology, like forensic investigative genetic genealogy finally offer some answers?

Let's get into Craig Leonard's case.

Who Was Craig Leonard?

In 2010, when Craig Leonard mysteriously disappeared, he was a 41-year-old father of three.

He was described as heavily built, with short, shaved blonde hair and distinctive tattoos covering his upper body.

At the time of his disappearance, Craig Leonard lived on Douglas Road, Salisbury East, South Australia, with his wife and daughter.

According to Crime Stoppers, Craig was in the process of moving out due to strained family relationships.

He was also managing several medical conditions that required daily medication before he mysteriously vanished.

Despite his challenges, Craig was deeply loved by his family, who continue to hope for answers

His sister, Deb Fulcher, remembered him fondly, saying, "Craig was a good laugh, someone who was always there to help you."

How Did Craig Leonard Disappear?

Craig Leonard mysteriously disappeared on January 10, 2010.

He was last seen at his Salisbury East home on Douglas Road around 10 a.m. by his wife and daughter.

According to Australia Broadcasting Corporation, his wife and daughter left for the day, leaving him behind.

When they returned, they assumed he was resting in the room.

However, hours later, it became clear that Craig had vanished.

Disturbingly, he left with only a few belongings, including cold sausages and junk food, suggesting he didn’t plan to be away for long.

Craig was not physically fit to walk long distances and had no known means of transportation that day.

Adding to the mystery, his bank account was accessed shortly after his disappearance, though police confirmed he wasn’t the one who made the transaction.

“Police have footage of who used his bank card ... and we know it wasn't him,” said his sister.

This raises chilling questions about who accessed his funds and why.

The family has since described Craig as someone who wouldn’t disappear without a trace.

“After all this time, I think he would have reached out to Mum or myself,” said his sister, Deb Fulcher.

His sudden disappearance has really left his loved ones devastated for years.

The Investigation into Craig Leonard’s Disappearance

After his wife reported him missing on January 11, 2010, Elizabeth police and major crime detectives launched an intensive investigation to uncover what had happened.

From the onset, authorities suspected foul play.

This was due to Craig’s inability to walk long distances and his reliance on daily medication for serious health issues.

Initial Efforts and Crime Scene Analysis

Investigators first focused on Craig's home in Salisbury East, where he was last seen.

Crime scene investigators meticulously examined the property, including digging up sections of the backyard in search of evidence.

This effort, however, yielded no significant leads.

Detectives also conducted interviews with Craig’s family and close associates to determine if any tensions or disputes could explain his sudden disappearance.

But nothing concrete came up.

Another search effort took place in the River Murray, a location where Craig and his family often vacationed.

Police divers combed the area, but once again, no trace of Craig or any evidence connected to his case was found.

The ATM Withdrawal

A crucial lead in the investigation was a suspicious ATM withdrawal made from Craig’s account shortly after he disappeared.

According to Detective Sergeant Shaun Osborn of the Major Crime Investigation unit, that transaction may be the key to solving this cold case.

Surveillance footage revealed that the person withdrawing the cash was not Craig, raising serious concerns about who accessed his account and why.

While police have identified the individual responsible for the withdrawal, legal restrictions have prevented them from publicly naming the person.

Detective Sgt. Osborn noted that the fraudulent use of Craig's account remains circumstantial and has not provided conclusive evidence about his disappearance.

Possible Theories in Craig Leonard’s Disappearance

Craig Leonard’s mysterious disappearance has led to several theories being proposed by investigators, family members, and online sleuths.

While no single explanation has been confirmed, each theory provides potential insight into what may have happened.

1. Foul Play: One of the primary theories is that Craig was the victim of foul play.

His sudden disappearance and the lack of contact with loved ones raised suspicions early on.

There were no signs of distress or struggle at his last known location.

However, investigators have not ruled out the possibility that he encountered someone with harmful and evil intentions.

2. Voluntary Disappearance: Another theory suggests that Craig may have chosen to disappear voluntarily.

However, those close to him argue against this idea, citing his stable life and strong relationships.

“After all this time, I think he would have reached out to Mum or myself,” said his sister, Deb Fulcher.

His family shared that he also depended on daily medication for his health, but he left it behind.

“We don’t believe he’s gone off somewhere to start a new life. His capacity to do that, in our estimation, would be very limited,” said Detective Sergeant Shaun Osborn.

Nevertheless, investigators have explored whether he may have been dealing with personal issues unknown to others.

3. Accidental Injury or Death: Some believe that Craig may have suffered an accident after he left. However, there were no signs of an accident or a dead body.

Each of these theories offers potential answers, but until more evidence is uncovered, Craig Leonard’s disappearance remains an unresolved mystery.

Ongoing Efforts to Solve This Cold Case

Despite the lack of progress, efforts to solve Craig Leonard’s case persist.

Investigators continue to explore all possibilities, hoping to uncover the truth and bring closure to those who knew and loved him.

A reward of $200,000 has been offered for information leading to a conviction or recovery of his remains.

His sister Deb continues to advocate for the case, emphasizing its emotional toll on their family.

“We think about Craig every day,” Deb said.

“We just want closure—for us and for our parents who deserve to know what happened to their son,” she added.
