What was supposed to be a happy family wedding in Illinois ended in tragedy when a 76-year-old man allegedly killed his daughter-in-law after finding out she wanted to divorce his son.
Roland Schmidt, from Schaumburg, is now facing a first-degree murder charge for the killing of 45-year-old Christine Moyer, a mother of two.
The shocking incident took place on July 25, 2025, at a Marriott hotel located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, where the family had gathered to celebrate a wedding.
While the wedding was underway, Moyer stepped outside to speak with another family member.
Schmidt followed her into the parking lot and, without saying a word, he walked up behind her and allegedly shot her in the back of the head.

According to ABC57 Chicago, Schmidt confessed to planning the attack a week before the wedding.
Authorities say he even considered taking his own life before he ultimately decided to target Moyer.
The shooting was witnessed by multiple family members, leaving the wedding guests traumatized.
Moyer, who was described as a devoted mother, leaves behind two children.
Schmidt appeared in court on July 28, 2025, where a judge ordered him to be held without bail.
His next hearing is scheduled for August 22, 2025, as per Independent News.
"This was a planned, execution-style killing," a prosecutor stated during his court appearance. "The defendant admitted to premeditating this act due to his anger over the impending divorce."
Outside the courtroom, two people who knew Schmidt briefly spoke to reporters, simply saying, “Pray for her children.”
