Morgan Skye Thornton: North Alabama Mother Allegedly Beat Her 8-Month-Old Son to Death While She Was Drunk

A North Alabama mother is facing capital murder charges after her 8-month-old son was found unresponsive and severely beaten in their Athens home.

The tragic incident has left the community in shock and raised disturbing questions about what led to the infant’s death.

Morgan Skye Thornton, 29, was arrested on August 1, 2025, after Limestone County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call about an unresponsive infant at her home on Estate Drive East.

When authorities arrived just after 12:30 a.m., they found her 8-month-old son, Jonah James Thornton, with no signs of life.

According to officials, Thornton appeared intoxicated and was taken into custody immediately.

Deputies and Athens-Limestone EMS performed CPR and managed to regain a pulse before rushing Jonah to UAB Trauma Service.

Tragically, the infant died on the way to the hospital and was pronounced dead at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

Thornton was initially charged with aggravated child abuse, but after Jonah’s death, the charge was upgraded to capital murder.

During her court appearance Friday, she claimed she was confused over the accusations:

"I put my son to bed," she told WAFF 48 News after her appearance. "I swaddled him and put him to bed at 7 o'clock, and then something happened… Tried to give him CPR. That's all."

However, after her court appearance, a family member openly criticized Thornton in a Facebook post, calling her “an evil, sick, and twisted witch,” as per Law&Crime

"She lied in that video! She said she put Jonah to bed at 7:00 and didn’t remember anything after that," the post read. "She went in there and woke my nephew up and told him to ‘come look at what she did to this demon.’ She also said she tried to give him CPR—she did not, my nephew did!"

The relative also speculated that Thornton may have been under the influence of sonething else, and not just alcohol at the time.

"No amount of alcohol could cause you to hallucinate to that degree. My opinion, she was either on something my nephew didn’t know about or just ate up with evil," wrote the family member.

Morgan Thornton during her court appearance

Morgan Skye Thornton is currently being held in the Limestone County Jail without bond while she awaits an Aniah’s Law hearing.

This hearing will decide if she qualifies for bail, considering her criminal history and the severity of the charges.

According to Daily Mail News, court records show that Thornton has had a troubled past.

In July 2023, she pleaded guilty to second-degree assault after kicking a police officer.

Other charges related to that incident, including DUI, domestic violence, and disorderly conduct, were dropped as part of a plea deal.

She also has a 2019 conviction for public intoxication.

Limestone County Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin praised first responders for their efforts, saying:

"Please keep this family and everyone who responded to this heartbreaking scene in your prayers. While the outcome is devastating, I’m incredibly proud of our deputies, firefighters, EMTs, hospital staff, and DHR workers who did absolutely everything in their power to save this innocent child."

Meanwhile, Authorities later executed search warrants at her home and took a blood sample from Thornton for further testing and investigation. An autopsy is also pending to determine the official cause of death
