In Butler Township, Luzerne County, a 13-year-old adopted boy was allegedly beaten to death by his father while his mother stood by and watched.
The shocking incident, which took place on Sunday, August 3, 2025, has resulted in criminal charges against both parents, as reported by Crime Online.
According to police reports, 39-year-old Cesar Delgadillo allegedly assaulted his adopted son for hours, after two other children in the home accused the boy of sexually assaulting them.
The boy’s adoptive mother, 34-year-old Virginia Delgadillo, is said to have also witnessed the brutal beating.
However, she did nothing to stop it before going to bed, as reported by Wvia News
Security footage from inside the home showed Cesar using a back scratcher, electrical cord, and rubber hammer to attack the boy.
At one point, he allegedly jammed the back scratcher down the boy’s throat.
The assault took place overnight and carried on into the next morning, when Virginia woke up and called 911.
She then dressed the boy in clean clothes, before he was then taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Hazleton, where he was later pronounced dead.
Criminal investigators now believe that this change of clothing was an attempt to hide his severe injuries.
The Police later searched the couple’s home after the boy’s death and found blood throughout the house and a strong smell of bleach, which suggested a desperate attempt to clean up evidence.
Tragically, this wasn’t an isolated incident.
Authorities discovered that four other foster children in the home, ranging from ages 5 to 16, had similar injuries—bruises and wounds from prolonged beatings with the same weapons.
Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo confirmed that the children are now in protective custody.
"The children are now in the custody of Luzerne County CYF. They are in a safe location," Crocamo said.
She also added that Luzerne County Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) did not officially place the kids with the Delgadillos, and how they ended up there is still under investigation.
Cesar Delgadillo now faces charges of homicide, child endangerment, tampering with evidence, and obstruction.
Virginia Delgadillo was charged with five counts of child endangerment, corruption of minors, and tampering with evidence.
Both remain in Luzerne County Prison without bail and Virginia’s preliminary hearing is set for August 14, 2025.
While the immediate focus is on justice for the victims, many are asking:
- How were these children placed with the Delgadillos? (Officials have not disclosed which agencies were involved.)
- Were there any prior reports of abuse? (Luzerne County CYF stated they had no previous involvement with the family.)
This sad case shows the need for better safety rules in adoptive and foster care systems.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a young life and prays for the healing of the surviving children.
