A 27-year-old father has been handed a life sentence for brutal and horrific murder of his own 14-day-old son in a hospital neonatal unit, in Bristol, UK.
Daniel Gunter, of no fixed address, was found guilty of murder in July this year for the "catastrophic" assault on his prematurely born son, Brendon Staddon, on March 5, 2024, at Yeovil District Hospital.
On Friday, October 3, 2025, at Bristol Crown Court, the Honourable Mr Justice Swift sentenced Gunter to life in prison, with a minimum term of 20 years, as per PEOPLE .
Brendon Staddon was born prematurely at 33 weeks on February 20, 2024, and at the time, the infant weighed "less than a couple bags of sugar."
According to prosecutors, Brendon was physically assaulted by his his father after his birth.
As as result of this, the infant suffered fatal injuries from head to toe, including a shattered skull, a broken neck, a broken jaw, and multiple broken legs.
Medical experts stated that the injuries were so severe and they compared the injuries to a fall from a multi-storey building.
Nurses later testified during the trial that they had repeatedly told Gunter to stop handling, overstimulating and fussing baby Brendon by tickling him, poking him, and not allowing him to rest.
They also reported that they witnessed Gunter "being rough" with the newborn and becoming angry with him during routine care.
In the hours before Brendon’s death, nurses on duty noticed a shift in Gunter’s demeanor. One nurse reported that around 3:30 a.m. on March 5, Gunter’s response to a routine check-in seemed "odd" and "unnatural."
“He seemed excited, his response was unusually animated, and he was nodding exaggeratedly,” prosecutors stated. “The nurse thought it was as if he didn’t want her to go over to him.”
During the trial, jurors were presented with more evidence that further implicated Gunter and weakened his defense. This included his disturbing behavior after his son was found unresponsive.
According to the BBC, while doctors tried to resuscitate Brendon, Gunter and the child’s mother went outside for a smoke, which seemed odd given the circumstances at hand.
Infact, Detective Chief Inspector Nadine Partridge of Avon and Somerset Police called Gunter's actions "incomprehensible."
“This has been one of the most harrowing investigations our team has ever faced,” DCI Partridge told reporters.
“The loss of such a young and innocent life has had a profound impact, not only on the family and those who knew Brendon, but also on the staff at Yeovil District Hospital and all those involved in the investigation."
The court also heard about Gunter’s controlling and emotionally abusive behavior towards the child’s mother, 21-year-old Sophie Staddon, who was later acquitted of charges related to the death.
Simon Gunter, the defendant’s father and Brendon’s grandfather described his grandson "just perfect," during the trial. He also said that " time stopped still" when he learned of the baby’s death.
“We will never see his first crawl, his first steps or his first word,” Simon Gunter told the court. “He didn't even have a chance to give us his first smile," he added.
In his sentencing remarks, Mr Justice Swift stated noted the sheer violence of the act, stating, "The extent of the injuries puts me beyond doubt that you acted with the intention to kill."
