Joshua Brown: Oklahoma Father Sentenced to Life for Beating His Wife to Death in Front of Their Children
An Oklahoma man, Joshua Brown, has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after admitting to the brutal murder of his wife, Shawntae Lynn Brown, in front of their three children.
The shocking case, which took place in September 2020, left the local community heartbroken and horrified.
According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers received a 911 call just before 2 a.m. on September 30, 2020, from the family’s home in Spencer, Oklahoma.
When deputies arrived, they found the body of 34-year-old Shawntae Lynn Brown inside the house, alongside her husband and their three children, aged 7, 14, and 15.
Investigators later uncovered that Joshua Brown had beaten Shawntae over the course of two days using several objects, including a belt, a shoe, a flagpole, and even a handgun.
According to Law&Crime, a probable cause affidavit described her body as being “covered in bruises, contusions, and lacerations consistent with a severe beating.”
Mark Myers, a public information officer for the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Department, described the crime scene as deeply disturbing.
“It was very obvious that a violent crime had happened in that house,” Myers told news men. “It was just a very gruesome scene. What a horrible, tragic event for these kids to have to go through.”
The couple’s 14-year-old told authorities that he saw his father repeatedly beat his mother. He said his father allegedly forced all of his children to clean up the blood, and also ordered them not to tell anyone about what had happened.
A “large amount of blood” was found throughout the home, along with holes in the walls believed to be caused by punches or kicks.
Investigators also recovered a semi-automatic handgun that had been used so violently that “the fiber optic front sight had shattered and was caked with blood and hair.”
Joshua Brown, now 39, admitted to authorities that he “went too far” during a fight with his wife and began punching and strangling her in front of the children.
He was immediately arrested and charged with first-degree murder and child abuse afte his confession.
Following his arrest, Brown remained in the Oklahoma County Detention Center without bond until he accepted a plea deal this week.
Under the agreement, he received four life sentences without the possibility of parole and gave up his right to appeal.
Before the plea deal was finalized, prosecutors consulted Joshua Brown’s children to understand their views on the sentence.
His daughter, Aliesha Brown, shared mixed emotions about her father’s punishment.
“I know a lot of my family wanted the death penalty,” she told CBS affiliate KWTV. “It’s been a long journey, and I’ve grown a lot since then. Obviously, I was a kid, now I’m a young adult, but it’s not going to get any easier. Knowing justice has been served and due process has been done, I can finally get some peace.”
With Joshua Brown’s guilty plea and life sentence, the case has finally come to a legal end. But for his children, the pain and trauma of witnessing such a tragedy will likely last a lifetime.
