Cody James Denewith: Oregon Man Sentenced to More Than 27 Years for Fatal Shooting of Former Co-Worker

27-year-old Cody James Denewith has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for fatally shooting his former co-worker, Nathan Dean Anderson, in an act which was fueled by jealousy.

According to authorities, the case began on April 29, 2024, when police responded to a shooting involving 25-year-old Nathan Anderson from Oregon City.

Anderson had been shot three times in the abdomen, so paramedics rushed him to Oregon Health & Science University, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

After preliminary investigations, the shooter was quickly identified as Cody Denewith, who had worked with Anderson at Dave’s Killer Bread.

During the investigation, detectives uncovered that Denewith committed the crime because he believed Anderson had been intimate with his girlfriend, 27-year-old Dominique Marie Britt.

Just days before the shooting, police had responded to a domestic violence call at the Milwaukie apartment shared by Denewith and Britt.

Denewith was arrested and briefly jailed. However, during his time behind bars, Britt claimed Anderson had sexually assaulted her — a statement prosecutors said sent Denewith into a rage.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Bryan Censoni said Denewith became “consumed by the belief that it had happened” and grew “fixated … on getting revenge.”

According to court documents, Denewith didn’t hide his intentions, and three days before the shooting, he told Britt exactly what he planned to do.

He even sent text messages to several family members, trying to get help in killing Anderson, but none agreed.

On April 29, 2024, the day of the shooting, Denewith texted Britt again — this time asking her to pack clothes and his “toy,” a code word the couple used for his Sig Sauer P365 handgun.

Britt later admitted she knowingly delivered the gun to him, fully aware of what he planned to do. “She knew he intended to kill Anderson,” investigators said.

Both Denewith and Britt were originally charged with Second-Degree Murder, which carries a possible life sentence. But each later accepted plea deals.

Dominique Britt pleaded guilty in December 2024 to manslaughter in the First Degree, and unlawful Use of a Weapon, and she was sentenced to 150 months (12.5 years) in prison.

Cody Denewith pleaded guilty on in 2025 to manslaughter in the First Degree and assault in the First Degree with a Firearm. He was later dentenced to 27½ years, with a chance to earn limited credit.

Prosecutors also noted Denewith’s criminal past. He had prior convictions, including a 2022 felony firearm case in Clatsop County and a 2016 burglary conviction in Oklahoma.

With both defendants now serving lengthy prison sentences, the case serves as a painful reminder of how quickly emotions, mistrust, and violent decisions can destroy lives.
