47-year-old Carmen Lopez was brutally stabbed to death inside her apartment building on November 11, 2025, in what prosecutors describe as a planned and vicious attack.
Authorities say the suspect, 41-year-old Luis Marquez, her on-and-off boyfriend of several years, waited hours in her apartment building before attacking her the moment she got back.
Just hours before the killing, Marquez was seen at work at RC Meat Market in the Bronx, acting completely normal, according to surveillance video from the store.
Store owner Ramon Cedano told reporters that Marquez showed nothing unusual in his behavior that night.
“We closed down and I said ‘bye, bye.’ He said, ‘I’m going this way.’ I said, ‘take care of yourself,’ and he said, ‘okay, I’ll see you on Monday,’ Cedano added.
Coworkers said Marquez had been quiet, calm, and kept to himself during his six months at the shop. Cedano also explained how shocked everyone was when they learned he was accused of murder:
“Everybody is shocked, I’m telling you. He doesn’t talk, nothing, nothing.”

During Marquez’s arraignment on Wednesday, November 13, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Jonathon Junig revealed disturbing details of the attack.
Prosecutors say Marquez followed Lopez the night before while she was out with friends at a local club. After stalking her for a while, he allegedly went to her building, slipped inside, and waited in the stairwell for more than two hours.
When Lopez stepped off the elevator around 4 a.m, the attack began immediately.
“[Marquez] lunged at her, pinned her to the ground and repeatedly stabbed her in her stomach, her throat and her chest,”Junig told the court.
Even after Lopez stopped moving, Marquez continued stabbing her, using both hands to drive the knife deeper, and according to prosecutors, Lopez was heard screaming, “No, Luis,” during the assault,
Medical examiners confirmed the knife pierced her liver and aorta, leading to massive blood loss, as per New York Post.
A building porter discovered her in the hallway after the culprit ran away, and Lopez was rushed to the hospital but, sadly, she was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police revealed that two of Lopez’s four children were sleeping inside their apartment, only steps away from where their mother was left dying.
They also said that Marquez had been jealous and angry for years during their on-and-off relationship.
After the stabbing, Marquez allegedly went back to his room in the Bronx and confessed to relatives.
One of his acquaintances then took him to a local hospital for psychiatric observation, where he was arrested.
During questioning, Marquez claimed he was blackout drunk and didn’t remember the attack, according to prosecutors.
However, he still identified himself in the surveillance footage from the scene.
People who knew Marquez described him as quiet and private.
He visited the same Bronx barbershop every Friday, where barber Santiago Torres said:
“He’s never a problem. He is very quiet. He’s closed-mouthed. I’m telling you, everybody’s still in shock.”
No one around him ever imagined he could be involved in such a brutal crime.
Marquez appeared in court wearing the same Hollister jacket he had on during his arrest. He showed no expression as the charges were read.
He has been ordered held without bail and is scheduled to return to court on November 17, and if convicted of murder, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
