Henry Walston: Florida Man Accused of Killing Two Young Children Before Setting Home on Fire, Police Say

Authorities in Escambia County, Florida, say a 27-year-old man is facing serious charges after two children were found dead in a house fire. 

Investigators believe the man deliberately set the fire to cover up their murders.

On Friday, November 7, 2025, deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) responded to reports of a fire at a trailer located on Flaxman Street, inside the Grand Oak Mobile Home Park. 

When firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze, they discovered the bodies of two young children inside.

According to PEOPLE, the victims were later identified as 9-year-old Vayden Orum and 7-year-old Rayden Smith, as per WEAR ABC 3 News.

In an official statement, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that both children were killed before the fire was started, and that one of the victims had been sexually assaulted.

“The fire was intentionally set after the children were killed,” the statement read. “Evidence shows that John Henry Walston, Jr. assaulted one of the children before killing them both. He then set the fire before shaving himself.”

Sheriff Chip Simmons described the tragedy as “a heartbreaking and senseless act of violence.” In a video update shared by the department, he added, “I don’t know what else I can say about this terrible event except for please hug your children.”

The ECSO identified the suspect as John Henry Walston, Jr., 27, who is now being held without bond at the Escambia County Jail. 

He faces multiple charges, including:
  • Two counts of premeditated murder
  • One count of sexual assault on a victim under 12
  • One count of arson
According to PEOPLE, reports also indicate that Walston has been accused of killing a dog found inside the burned trailer. His first court appearance is scheduled for November 26, 2025.

Tyler Smith, father to Rayden and stepfather to Vayden, told newsmen that his children were staying at Walston’s home at the time of the incident. 

He said he had known the suspect for years and couldn’t believe what happened.

"How can you expect any human being to do this?" Smith said. "Let alone an adult with two kids."

Neighbors also recalled the horrifying moments the children’s mother entered the fire as she tried to rescue them.

"She went into the trailer trying to get them. That’s a mother’s love," Wenzel told the outlet. "She went inside the house trying to get her kids, but it was too hot. They finally got her out of there," said John Wenzel, who lives nearby.

The mother survived but she suffered serious burns and was taken to the Mobile Burn Center for treatment.

Residents of Grand Oak Mobile Home Park have expressed deep sorrow and disbelief as they struggle to make sense of the tragedy. Many gathered near the burned trailer to leave flowers and stuffed animals in memory of the two children.
