An Ohio man will spend decades behind bars for a tragic incident that claimed the life of his two-year-old daughter.
Nicholas Stemen, 34, was sentenced on Monday, November 17, 2025, for the death of his daughter, Lillyanna, who died in a fiery car crash while he saved himself.
Stemen had pleaded guilty in October 2025 to charges of aggravated arson, involuntary manslaughter, and endangering a child, before the court handed down a prison sentence of 22 years to 27 years and 6 months.

The tragedy unfolded in September, 2024. According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, Stemen had spent the night "consuming at least 10 alcoholic beverages, namely beer," before getting behind the wheel with his daughter in the car.
He was driving his 2013 GMC Terrain erratically, and the vehicle was seen missing a tire before it left the roadway and came to a stop. Shortly after, the SUV became fully engulfed in flames.
When Allen County Sheriff's deputies and American Township firefighters arrived at the scene, they found Stemen outside the vehicle, trying to stand.
The affidavit notes that he was unsteady on his feet and that cops "could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from Stemen's person."
When a battalion chief asked Stemen if anyone else was in the vehicle, Stemen answered, "no one." He later claimed he had a daughter but that she was with her grandfather.
However, when one firefighter was asked to look inside the burned-out vehicle, she made a horrifying discovery.
"Upon doing so, she observed a small body, in a forward-facing car seat," the affidavit recounts. "She stated she could tell it was human due to seeing skin and blood on the thighs."
Tragically, little Lillyanna had been left to die while her father stood outside.
During his emotional sentencing hearing, a letter written by Lillyanna's mother was read aloud to the court. Her words captured the immense loss and anger felt by the family.
"My baby girl is gone. And for what? For her father enjoying a night of drinking?" the letter said. "He killed her. He took her from everyone who loved her so much. He should spend his life behind bars."
Stemen also spoke at the hearing, apologizing for his actions. He claimed to have no memory of the crash due to blacking out from alcohol.
"I know what my actions caused. Now I won't get to see my little girl grow up, and that hits me to my core," Stemen said. "I'm sorry I took her away … I'm sorry she's gone. I have no recollection of what happened."
The judge overseeing the case delivered a powerful statement. He told Stemen that his sentence extended beyond prison walls, as he was also being sentenced to a "lifetime of thinking what your daughter could have been doing."
Even though the legal proceedings for Nicholas Stemen have concluded. However, for Lillyanna’s loved ones, the life sentence of grief and loss is just beginning.
