Andreas Probst: Las Vegas Teens Sentenced to Maximum Time in Deadly Hit-and-Run That Killed Retired Police Chief

On August 14, 2023, a quiet Las Vegas road became the scene of a deadly crime that shocked the nation. 

Andreas “Andy” Probst, a 64-year-old retired police chief from Bell, California, was riding his bicycle along the side of the road when he was struck and killed in what police described as an intentional hit-and-run.

Probst, who had served as a police chief for years before retiring, was pedaling on an otherwise empty road when a stolen vehicle approached him from behind and intentionally crashed him.

According to police reports, the incident was recorded on video from inside the vehicle. The footage, shot from the front passenger seat, showed the car closing in on Probst before steering directly toward him.

Probst was thrown onto the hood, slammed into the windshield, and then fell to the ground near the curb, leading to his death.

After an investigation, the police identified the culprits as Jesus Ayala and Jzamir Keys, who were 17 and 16 years old at the time of the crash. Police also found out that the teens were tied to at least three hit-and-run incidents that same day.

Both of them were later charged as adults under Nevada law, and they were indicted on multiple felony counts, including:
  • Murder
  • Auto theft
  • Battery
  • Attempted murder
  • Residential burglary
  • Multiple counts of possessing stolen vehicles

In October 2023, the teens appeared in court and entered not guilty pleas, showing little emotion as they smiled for cameras and laughed, behavior that many found disturbing given the seriousness of the charges.

Because the suspects were minors at the time of the crime, Nevada law did not allow the death penalty, and the maximum possible sentence was 20 years to life in prison.

In October 2025, both Ayala and Keys separately agreed to plea deals, admitting guilt in the deadly hit-and-run that killed Probst.

During sentencing, the judge handed down the maximum punishment which was allowed under the law.

Jesus Ayala, the driver, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison, and Jzamir Keys, the passenger, received 18 years to life in prison.

Both were sentenced on multiple felony counts, including second-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson addressed the court after sentencing, calling the crime a deliberate act that ended an innocent life.

“This sentence reflects the seriousness of this crime and the value of human life,” Wolfson said. “Jesus Ayala and Jzamir Keys made a conscious decision that resulted in the death of an innocent man. My office remained committed to ensuring they were held fully accountable.”

On the final day in court, several members of Andreas Probst’s family spoke about the pain caused by the loss of a husband, father, and former public servant.

The Las Vegas hit-and-run case drew widespread attention due to the video evidence which went viral online, the ages of the suspects, and the disturbing nature of the crime. Many viewed the footage as proof that the attack was intentional, not reckless.

With sentencing now complete, prosecutors say the case sends a clear message about accountability, even when the suspects are juveniles.
