BodyCam Video: Plain Township Man, Shane Newman, Charged After He Tried To Shoot An Officer in The Head

A Plain Township man is facing multiple serious charges after a suspected shoplifting incident at a Walmart escalated into a dangerous confrontation with police.

According to Canton police, the incident happened on December 17, 2025, at the Walmart located on Atlantic Boulevard NE in Canton, Ohio.

Around 1:45 p.m on that day, officers were called to the store following reports of suspected shoplifting.

When the officer arrived, store employees had already detained two people — Shane Newman, 21, and Katerina Jeffrey, 23. 

According to, both suspects were taken into the store’s loss prevention office while the situation was being handled.

It was inside that office where things suddenly took a serious turn.

Police say Newman pulled out a gun while the officer was inside the room with both suspects. According to the bodycam footage of the incident, Newman attempted to shoot the officer in the head, but the weapon failed and did not fire.

Before Newman could try again, a Walmart asset protection employee jumped onto him to stop the situation from getting worse. The officer then took Newman to the ground and placed him under arrest.

Body camera footage below captured the tense moment. In the video, the officer later explained why he did not fire his own weapon during the struggle.

“I didn’t want to risk hitting the Walmart employee who was on top of him,” the officer said in the bodycam footage.


 


Court records show that Newman now faces several felony charges, including attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, drug possession, and having a weapon under disability.

Authorities say Newman had a prior felony conviction, which legally prevented him from owning or possessing a weapon.

After his arrest, officers searched Newman and recovered 50 blue pills, later identified as Molly, according to court documents.

Police say the second suspect, Katerina Jeffrey, who is from Canton, was also charged in connection with the incident. She is facing a charge of complicity to commit robbery, court records show.

Both Newman and Jeffrey appeared in Canton Municipal Court on Friday, December 18, 2025. A judge set Newman’s bond at $1 million, while Jeffrey’s bond was set at $500,000.

According to Cleveland19, both suspects are scheduled to return to court on December 23, 2025, as the case continues through the legal system.
