In March 2023, Angela Craig, a 43-year-old mother of six, became seriously ill after drinking protein shakes prepared by her husband, James Craig, a licensed dentist in Colorado.
At the time, no one could have imagined that her husband was the one responsible for her illness, which led to her death.
Nearly two years later, in 2025, a Colorado jury found James Craig guilty of first-degree murder, and a judge later sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to police reports, Craig secretly added arsenic to Angela’s protein shakes while she was at home on March 15 2023.
Just days later, she became dizzy and weak after drinking the shakes, so when her condition worsened, she was quickly rushed to a hospital near Denver.
Medical tests later showed she had been poisoned, and doctors worked really hard to stabilize her, as reported by BBC.
But while Angela lay sick in her hospital bed, authorities say that James Craig took his evil plan even further.
Security camera footage showed him entering her hospital room and leaving minutes later while he was holding a syringe.
Angela’s health rapidly declined after that visit because he reportedly injected her with a fatal dose of cyanide while he was in the room.
Doctors eventually declared her brain-dead, and she passed away a few days later.
The Arapahoe County coroner ruled her death a homicide, caused by cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, a chemical often found in eye drops.
According to criminal investigators, James Craig committed the crime because he had been cheating and was struggling with money problems.
They said he felt trapped in his marriage but did not want to go through a divorce, so he carefully planned to poison his wife.
Investigators also uncovered that Craig had searched online for phrases like “how many grams of pure arsenic will kill a human” and “is arsenic detectable in an autopsy?”
These searches and other overwhelming evidence eventually led to the arrest and prosecution of the former Colorado Dentist.
But while Craig was in jail awaiting trial, instead of bring remorseful, he tried to convince another inmate to kill the detective handling his case.
This led to an additional charge of solicitation to commit murder, which the jury also upheld.

During the two-week trial, Craig’s defense team claimed Angela took her own life because she was heartbroken after discovering her husband’s repeated affairs.
However, prosecutors strongly disputed this claim, and they presented medical evidence, internet searches, chemical deliveries, and video footage which all pointed back to James Craig.
After reviewing the evidence, the jury rejected the suicide claim and found him guilty of murder.
On sentencing day, Arapahoe County District Judge Shay Whitaker sentenced James Craig to life in prison without parole for the murder of his wife. He also received an additional 33 years for the other charges.
District Attorney Amy Padden described the crime as calculated and cruel. “This is Angela’s husband poisoning her, causing her to die a slow death,” she said. “It wasn’t something done in the heat of passion. It was deliberate,” said Padden.
One of the couple’s six children, Miriam Meservy, addressed the court during her victim impact statement
“I was supposed to be able to trust my dad. He was supposed to be my hero, and instead he’ll forever be the villain in my book,” she said, with her words highlighting the deep and lasting damage left behind by the crime.
