A Liberty County jury has sentenced Nicholas Kassotis to spend the rest of his life in prison for the brutal killing of his wife, Mindi Mebane Kassotis, in 2022.

On December 2, 2022, some deer hunters at the Portal Hunting Club near Riceboro, Georgia, found a headless body while they went hunting, as seen in the video below.
Over the following days, more body parts, including a head, were found within a three-mile area.
For weeks, authorities did not know who the victim was and on December 13, 2022, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) released a forensic sketch and asked the public for help.
When nothing concrete emerged, the GBI turned to the FBI for help using genealogy DNA testing, as per Coastal Courier.
Family members later provided DNA samples, and on May 11, 2023, after six months, criminal investigators confirmed the remains belonged to 40-year-old Mindi Mebane Kassotis.
At the time, no missing person report had been filed, which made it hard for investigators to know the victim was Mindi Kassotis.
According to her family, Nicholas Kassotis told them that Mindi had died in a hospital, after she had been admitted for several days, and that he was not allowed to see her body.
However, he could not give clear details about the hospital or what exactly happened. Anyways, the next day after Mindi was officially identified, on May 12, 2023, her husband was arrested and taken in for questioning.
After his wife went missing, Nicholas Kassotis, got married and changed his name to Nicholas Killian Stark.
He was later tracked down to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including:
- Malice murder
- Felony murder
- Aggravated assault
- Tampering with evidence
- Removal of body parts
During the investigation and trial, Kassotis denied the allegations, claiming that he and Mindi were being controlled by a dangerous man named “Jim McIntyre.”
According to Kassotis, he believed this man killed his wife because he told them where to live, managed their money, and forced them to move constantly.
Even though records showed that the couple had moved more than 50 times in just a few years, investigators didn't believe him and they also found no proof that “Jim McIntyre” existed.
Authorities believe Mindi had likely been killed one to two weeks before her body was found, placing her death around mid-November 2022.
During sentencing, Superior Court Judge Paul Rose called the 'Jim McIntyre' story a lie, saying Kassotis had created a fake world to control his wife.
“You write fiction — and your life was a fiction. And then you carried out a brutal, horrific, gruesome murder of Mindi,” Judge Rose told Kassotis in court.
Several family members also testified during his trial that Nicholas was controlling, saying that he had isolated and cut off Mindi’s loved ones from her life.
Mindi’s sister-in-law, Megan Mebane, described Kassotis as controlling and emotionless even after Mindi’s death.
“You have no remorse for what you did. You deserve to sit in prison for the rest of your life and think about Mindi every day,” she told him.

On Thursday, August 14, 2025, a Liberty County jury took about one hour to reach a verdict, and Nicholas Kassotis was found guilty on all 12 counts, including malice murder and felony murder.
In the end, Judge Rose sentenced him to life in prison without parole, plus an additional 25 years.
“This is truly a heinous crime. All her hopes and dreams were dashed in an instant,” said Judge Rose said during sentencing.
Kassotis did not speak in court after the verdict, but his parents did, claiming that they disagreed with the jury’s decision.
“We know him to be a calm, gentle man. That he could take someone’s life is unbelievable,” his mother, Linda Kassotis, told the court.
The judge acknowledged their pain but stood by the sentence.
Mindi Kassotis was described by friends and family as smart, kind, creative, and full of life. She was a writer, a business owner, and held a master’s degree in public and international affairs.
While her family says no sentence can bring her back, they believe the verdict ensures one thing — that Nicholas Kassotis can never harm anyone else again.
