Gabryel Ayers: Woman Killed, Man Wounded in Daylight Shooting With Baby in Car on Chicago’s South Side
According to Chicago police, the shooting happened around 1:25 p.m. on February 4, 2026, in the 7900 block of South May Street, near St. Sabina Parish on the city’s South Side, as per CBS News.
Police said the woman and man were inside a white sedan when several people ran up to the car and opened fire. Video shared online shows at least three shooters firing dozens of shots at the vehicle.
After briefly running away, the shooters got into a red Alfa Romeo and fired more shots into the car before leaving the area, police said.
After the shooting, the victims’ car crashed into a GMC van, but thankfully the driver of the van wasn’t harmed, and he refused medical treatment at the scene.
Aerial video from Chopper 7, taken around 2:40 p.m., showed the white sedan with shattered windows and many bullet holes. Police said more than 50 shots were fired, based on shell casings and evidence markers found on the ground.
According to police reports, the female victim, identified by family as 26-year-old Gabryel Ayers, was shot several times. She was eventually taken to OSF Little Company of Mary Hospital in critical condition, but sadly she died from her injuries.
The man was shot twice, once in the arm and once in the buttocks. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and was listed in good condition.
Police confirmed that Ayers’ infant daughter, who is less than one year old, was seated in the back of the car during the shooting, however, she was not injured.
A witness who recorded the video said they saw the baby crying in the back seat while holding a lollipop after the shooting stopped
Kirk Bell, Ayers’ godfather, spoke about the shooting and the child being inside the car.
“What’s the purpose of shooting at a car when you know there’s a child in the car?” Bell said. “That doesn’t make any sense. It could have been a lot more people who lost their life today.”
Bell confirmed the baby belonged to Ayers and said the child was properly secured in the back seat.
Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church, located just over a block from the shooting scene, said the attack shook the community.
“Thank God that baby is so young, they probably won’t remember this day,” Pfleger said. “But that baby is going to know that their mother was killed today. That baby could have been killed. They all had long guns,” he said. “Somebody needs to be held accountable.”
As of February 5, 2026, no one is in custody but Area 2 detectives are investigating the shooting even though it is still unclear what led up to the attack.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance video from nearby buildings and are asking anyone with information to contact police.
