Michael Anthony Burke: Caretaker Faces Murder Charge After Deadly Clash with Landscapers in Fallbrook
However, that changed when an argument broke out between the workers and Burke, who lived nearby and acted as a caretaker for a property nearby. What led to the dispute remains unclear, but cellphone video captured the tense moments that followed.
In the footage, Burke is seen standing beside a pickup truck, while holding a shotgun and talking to two men inside the vehicle.
“I got mucho friends in the policia, highway patrol… You wanna die today?” the man (Burke) is heard saying in the video. When one of the men questions him, the threat becomes more direct. “You wanna die today? I will kill you right now. Don’t f--- with me.”
The man continues, switching between English and Spanish, asking, “You sabe? You sabe in Español or in Inglés?”
Moments later, the situation escalates and Burke points the shotgun into the truck’s cabin. One of the occupants grabs the barrel, and a struggle begins, and sadly during the scuffle, the gun fires.
The video captures the aftermath of the shot, with the armed man saying, “See, you f----d around.”
Authorities say one man, later identified as Esteban, was killed. A second person in the truck was also shot but survived and was treated at a hospital before being released.
According to NBC News, investigators confirmed they are aware of the video and have reviewed it as part of the case.
Following the shooting, Michael Anthony Burke was taken into custody and booked into the Vista Detention Facility in San Diego County and he is being held without bail.
Prosecutors have charged him with murder, attempted murder, and shooting into an inhabited vehicle. Each charge carries a potential sentence of 25 years to life if he is found guilty.
The investigation remains ongoing, with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Homicide Unit leading the effort. Officials say they are conducting a “thorough and comprehensive investigation” into the events captured on video and the circumstances that led up to the shooting.
Those who knew the people involved have also begun to speak out. The property owner described Burke as someone with an “angry demeanor,” adding that “he wasn’t the friendliest person in the world.”
Esteban’s daughter, Martina Lucas, said her father had only gone to the property to help a friend. She described him as a devoted parent and expressed her grief outside a court hearing.
Burke has made his first court appearance and he entered a plea of not guilty. It is not yet clear whether he has retained a private attorney, and the public defender’s office has not commented on the case.
