A late-night prank in east Houston took an unexpected turn after an 11-year-old boy was shot while playing a common game known as “ding-dong ditch.”
The incident happened around 10:55 p.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2025, near Mimbrough and Fidelity streets, just east of the East Loop.
According to Police reports, the boy and a group of friends were running through the neighborhood, ringing doorbells and then running away.
However, what started as playful fun took a deadly turn when someone inside one of the homes stepped out and opened fire on the pranksters.
“A witness says someone ran out of that house and was shooting at the kids running down the street, and unfortunately, sadly enough, one of the boys who was 11 years old was shot in the back,” HPD Homicide Detective Sgt. Michael Cass told KHOU 11.
The child was rushed to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, but sadly, he died the next day, Sunday, August 31.
Detectives from the local police department later detained a man at the home where the shots came from.
He was reportedly questioned by homicide detectives but was not immediately arrested.
Investigators later executed a search warrant at the property, where they recovered several rifles and handguns.
Detectives have made it clear that the situation did not appear to be a case of self-defense.
“In my opinion, it does not look like any type of self-defense. It wasn’t close to the house, so it’ll more than likely be a murder charge,” Sgt. Cass said.
Some residents of the local community have described the game as harmless and could not believe it ended in a child’s death.
“What harm could they have done? Playing with a doorbell? That’s the part that really kind of hurts the heart,” one neighbor told KHOU 11.
“For someone to shoot him in the back, they knew they were a kid. What’s the purpose of it?”
However, other residents didn't find the game funny and they warned about safety concerns.
“You just don’t go knocking on people’s doors,” another neighbor said.
Sgt. Cass also reminded parents to warn their kids of these type of consequences, saying, “I guess for parents out there, just be more cautious of the times we’re living in now.”
Sadly, this isn’t the first time the prank has led to deadly outcomes.
In 2023, a California man was convicted of murder after ramming his car into a group of teenagers who rang his doorbell, killing three.
Earlier this year, in May 2025, a Virginia man was charged with second-degree murder after shooting a teen who filmed himself playing the same game outside his home at 3 a.m.
The boy’s identity has not been officially released as of September 1, 2025, but the case remains under active investigation, as per Guardian.
Houston police are working closely with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office to determine charges.
Detectives are also reviewing neighborhood surveillance footage and asking residents to share any additional evidence.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
