On April 1, 2026, a Yavapai County judge sentenced Kelly Rae Smith, a 45-year-old Prescott Valley resident, to prison for child sex crimes and bestiality charges.
Her crimes were exposed in April 2024 after the Prescott Valley Police got a tip that Smith had posted online that she had molested children she babysat in the past
This tip led to an extensive investigation, and when her electronic devices were searched, detectives uncovered several disturbing videos.
One clip showed Smith sexually assaulting a toddler, while another recording captured her performing sex acts with a service dog, as per Fox10Phoenix
Police also found additional child pornography videos and internet chat logs where Smith discussed fantasies involving children.
Authorities arrested Smith one year later in May 2025, and she later entered a guilty plea to the child sex crimes and bestiality charges.
She pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault, and according to the terms of her plea agreement, Smith must serve every day of her 52-year sentence with no chance of early release.
This means she will not become eligible for release until 2077, at which point she would begin lifetime sex offender probation.
Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane spoke about the case after the sentencing. "Crimes such as these are shocking and will never be tolerated in Yavapai County," McGrane said.
"People who choose to sexually abuse children or animals are incredibly dangerous and cannot be reformed." He added that he hopes the case pushes the Arizona Legislature to allow juries to impose the death penalty when an adult sexually assaults a child. "Doing so would allow appropriate punishment for anyone who chooses to rape a child and will deter others from committing these heinous crimes," McGrane said.
