Kendra Scott: Memphis Mother Charged with Murder After She Fatally Shot Man Hiding Under Her Daughter’s Bed
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis mother is facing a first-degree murder charge after police say she shot a man in the back of the head after she found him hiding under a bed in her daughter’s room.
Kendra Scott is also charged with employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. She is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court soon.
On July 16, 2026, officers were called to a home in the 3000 block of Travis Road and when they arrived, they found Rodderius Morton dead near the front porch.
According to police reports, he had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A neighbor later told investigators he heard banging, came outside and saw Scott standing in her front yard holding a gun and repeating, “I shot him, I shot him.”
When police spoke with Scott, she gave a brief statement about what happened. “I saw a dude under my kids’ bed, and I did what I had to do,” she said.

A juvenile who was inside the home at the time told investigators a more detailed version of events. She said Morton had been invited over and came in through the back door around 1 a.m.
They said Scott was not home, but about thirty minutes later, Scott returned, banging loudly on the front door and yelling, “Who’s at my house?”
The juvenile said she was frightened because Scott had a gun in her hand and was visibly angry.
She also told police that Scott had previously warned her, “If I see a boy in the house, then I will put a hole in his a**.”
After the juvenile unlocked the door, Scott found Morton hiding under a bed in the child’s room, and as Morton was leaving, the two got into a loud argument.
The juvenile heard Scott shout, “Get out of my house, b****!”
Once they made it to the front porch, the juvenile said she heard a single gunshot, as reported by News Nation.
Scott remains in custody with no bond set as at the time of this report.
