Kristopher Karolkiewicz: Michigan Father Shoots Wife and Six Children, Sets Home on Fire, Then Kills Himself - Police
GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities have confirmed that a father shot and killed his wife and all six of their children, then intentionally set their home on fire before taking his own life.
The mass killing ended with no survivors inside the family’s house near the Lake Michigan shoreline, and it has left the community grasping for answers that investigators say may never fully come.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office released those conclusions three days after firefighters pushed into the burning home and found the eight bodies in separate bedrooms, as reported by ABC News
According to police reports, every victim died from a gunshot wound. Kristopher “Kris” Karolkiewicz, 47, was ruled a suicide, while the deaths of his wife, 39-year-old Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, and their six children were ruled homicides.
The children, who ranged in age from 5 to 15, included four boys—ages 5, 11, 12, and 15—and two 11-year-old girls. Four were the couple’s biological children, and two were adopted daughters, authorities said. The family’s dogs and at least one cat also perished from the flames and smoke.

On the morning of July 24, 2026, someone reported the smell of smoke in the area, so fire personnel were called to search but they couldn’t locate a blaze. Roughly three hours later, more calls came in about white smoke drifting from the Karolkiewicz residence.
Crews returned, entered the home, and battled a fire while uncovering the bodies. Capt. Jake Sparks of the sheriff’s office said the fire was set in several places inside the house, with significant damage in the basement, and that it started after the murders had already been committed.
He indicated the shootings might have begun as early as the previous night, and that the weapon was a handgun, which investigators believe was registered.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened,” Sparks said during a Monday news briefing, reading a statement from Sheriff Eric DeBoer. “But we’ll do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims.” According to officials, no suspects are being sought, there were no prior police calls to the home and no criminal history for Kris Karolkiewicz.
As the investigation pushes forward, the Karolkiewicz and Lawwill families are planning seven funerals and pleading for any scrap of information that might explain the violence.
“Everybody wants to know why. It’s unfathomable, and we need to know why,” said Emily Stoye Jones, Mandy’s cousin. “Make it make sense just a little bit, because it doesn’t make sense,” she said, as per ClickOnDetriot
Her online messages showed some tension in their marriage, though relatives stress that Mandy kept such struggles very private.
Posts that Mandy reportedly wrote under the username MandyK1179 on a Reddit forum for couples recovering from infidelity detailed a long effort to rebuild trust after she discovered what she believed was an affair. In May 2024, she wrote, “We have six kids, so the idea of leaving is insanely terrifying.”
She described a husband who grew up in “a toxic family dynamic that encouraged lying” and who struggled with confrontation. “He’s a perfectionist,” she wrote, adding that “the slightest confrontation about how he’s caused me pain causes him to spiral.”
The couple attended marriage counseling, but at one point she confessed, “I’m feeling so discouraged that we’ll ever be able to make progress. He knows that I now know I deserve better than what he gave me in the past.”
Jones said the family never saw that private pain surface in person. “You never saw her sad. You never saw her upset. She just always looked on the bright side,” Jones recalled. “She was bubbly. She was funny. She was just that rare person that truly lit up any room she walked into.”
Outside of those online writings, Mandy poured her energy into her children and her community. She as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary in Grand Haven Area Public Schools, where the district said she responded to students “with empathy, patience, and care” and went “above and beyond” for them.
She also authored a book born from calming techniques and positive mantras she created to support her adopted daughters, who had special needs.
That passion for adoption dates back to her own childhood, when a third-grade teacher read a book about adopting a child from China. So, Mandy told her mother then that she would adopt a little girl from China one day, Jones said, and she fulfilled that dream by adopting two.
Just weeks before the killings, Mandy took her two daughters to China, visiting Shanghai Disney and the places where they were adopted, making sure the girls felt rooted and proud of their heritage.
“Mandy’s lot in life was to be a mom,” Jones said. “Every day, her focus was on them and making memories with them… and giving them the best experiences that she possibly could.” She made it a habit to carve out individual time with each child, building what Jones called a fiercely loving bond. “The kids loved her back with a fierceness. They just had such a beautiful relationship.”
Kris Karolkiewicz had recently lost his job. The American Heart Association confirmed his employment ended in July 2026; he had worked there remotely as a vice president of sales and marketing since September 2023, overseeing CPR and first aid training and products. The organization declined to elaborate, citing personnel privacy.
Before the horrors of last week, the couple’s life together presented a picture of joy and devotion. They reportedly met at a beverage company in 2008 and married in August 2009, as per online reports.
Mandy kept a parenting blog years ago, where she often wrote about her Christian faith, her love for her husband, and the delight she took in their growing family. “I’m a very lucky guy,” Kris wrote in a 2019 Facebook post ahead of their 10th anniversary. Mandy’s blog ended in 2016, but she continued to share family moments on TikTok, including clips from the recent China trip.
Mandy’s father, Steve Lawwill, posted a family photo on social media shortly after the deaths, writing, “So grateful for the joy they brought into our life. We are just so shattered.”
He and his wife, Becky, issued a statement that said, in part, “We pray for God’s peace and comfort as we grieve their deaths and honor their lives.” They asked that the media give the family space and respect the privacy of everyone who loved Mandy and the children. The family has already endured one loss in recent years: Mandy’s adult stepbrother died in 2020 from a fentanyl overdose.
Jones said she keeps a small heart-shaped trinket box near her kitchen sink that Mandy gave her years ago—a place for her wedding ring while washing dishes. To her, that little gift captures how her cousin loved people in quiet, deliberate ways. Jones hopes the world will look beyond the brutal facts of how Mandy and the children died. “Look at Mandy for who she was. Look at her kids for who they were, not because of what happened,” she said. “That shouldn’t be the highlight of their story.”
